Cell Divisions: A Rough Week for S.F.-Based Stem Cell Agency - 7.1.09

  • Last week, it was revealed that the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) -- created to fund stem-cell research through Proposition 71, the 2004 state ballot initiative -- was losing its highly respected chief scientist, Marie Csete. A New Clue About Salamanders’ Amazing Regenerating Limbs - 7.1.09

  • Contrary to what researchers previously believed, when a salamander’s legs are removed the cells near the amputation site revert to adult stem cells, but do not become pluripotent, or capable of developing into any body part. That explains why a salamander who loses a tail doesn’t regrow a leg in its place.

Scientists test stem cell therapy for Crohn's - 7.1.09

Master Stem Cell for Human Heart Identified - 7.1.09

  • For the first time, researchers have identified a single "master" stem cell in humans that is capable of differentiating into all three major cell types that make up the human heart.

Blood stem cell growth factor reverses memory decline in mice - 7.1.09

  • A human growth factor that stimulates blood stem cells to proliferate in the bone marrow reverses memory impairment in mice genetically altered to develop Alzheimer's disease, researchers at the University of South Florida and James A. Haley Hospital found.

Cord Blood Awareness Month: Understanding Still Low, Despite Medical Advancements - 7.1.09

  • Despite rapid advances using a child's own cord blood stem cells in regenerative therapies to repair damaged tissue due to injury or disease, most pregnant women today don't learn about the ability to save their newborn's cord blood.

Missouri scientists turn fibroblasts into stem cells - 7.1.09

  • Scientists at the University of Missouri say they found a way to convert regular cells from a pig's connective tissue -- called fibroblasts -- into stem cells, with no cloning involved.

Brain stem cell discovery - 7.1.09

  • Scientists have discovered a new mechanism in brain stem cells that controls how and when they develop into cells which repair damage in neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS).

Neuralstem Secures $1 Million in Registered Direct Offering - 7.1.09

Stem-cell treatment offers hope to Colorado boys - 7.1.09

  • That promise is a stem-cell treatment, one that isn't available in the United States. So both boys and their families will head to the XCell Center in Köln, Germany, late in July.

Stemedica Discovers Significant Breakthrough in the Use of Stem Cells and Stem Cell Factors for the Treatment of Retinal Degeneration - 7.1.09

  • Stemedica Cell Technologies, Inc., ("Stemedica"),a leader in the manufacturing and development of clinical grade allogeneic adult stem cell technology, has discovered a significant breakthrough in the use of human stem cells and stem cell factors for the potential treatment of degenerations of the retina and retinal pigmented epithelium.
